STEP 1: Register

If you would like to submit responses to questions on this website, and become a member of the Facing History and Ourselves Human Rights Global Student Network, you must first register and create an account. Registering is simple. Please make sure the username you create does not contain your last name. We also ask that you please review the terms and conditions page, which talks about what it means to be in civil conversation with one another.

STEP 2: Explore: Get to Know the Winners

Now that you have registered, it's time to learn about the five men and women profiled on this website. All of them are past winners of the Reebok Human Rights Award, given to activists under the age of thirty who have made significant contributions to human rights causes through nonviolent means. We call these award winners upstanders: those who do not simply stand by in the face of injustice, but understand that each one of us can make a difference.

Click on any one of the award winners to meet these extraordinary men and women. Once there, don't forget to login by clicking on the "login" link on the top or to the right of an Upstander to answer questions. 

STEP 3: Answer Questions: Add Your Comments

In each award winner's page, you will find a list of videos. Clicking on these videos brings up clips where students ask the award winners about the choices they made.

You can learn about the award winner's story, as well as view photos, a map, favorites and more by scrolling down the page.

After watching a video clip, it is your turn to respond to the same question asked of the award winner.

Watch each video and respond to the questions. You can edit your answers for each video by going to that video and retyping the text in the box and resubmitting. Please note that your answers are moderated, and will be available as soon as they are approved.

STEP 4: Become a Member: Get a Certificate

To become a member of the Facing History and Ourselves Human Rights Global Student Network, all you have to do is respond to at least one question for each of the five award winners.

Once you have done this, a certificate link will appear on the top of the page. Click on it to see your certificate, and to print out a copy that displays all of your responses.

Once you become a member, you will be notified through e-mail of any upcoming Be the Change events, such as live chats with the award winners.

STEP 5: Choose to Participate: Learn about Issues and Options

We hope that by learning about the award winners, you have begun to think about how people make a positive difference in the world, and to consider the role you play in your commuity. What issues do you care about? How can you get involved?

On our "What Can I Do?" page, you will find links to information on issues and organizations related to the award winners, as well as other human rights and social justice themes. We are only giving you a starting point—you may want to pursue a deeper exploration of the topics that most interest you.

Any time you are considering joining or working with any organization, it is important to do careful research and ask key questions such as:

• What is the reputation of this organization?
• Has anyone you know worked with this organization, and if so, have they had a positive experience?
• What are some of the strategies and approaches this organization uses? Do you agree with them?
• Have you compared this organization to other organizations dealing with similar issues?
• Does the organization's website clearly state its goals and mission?
• What aspects of the organization's values and work do you agree or disagree with?
• How is this organization funded and how much of the money goes directly to programs?
• What specifically would you do for this organization? What role would you play?
