Facing History & Ourselves

About This Site

Be the Change: Upstanders for Human Rights is a Facing History and Ourselves website that presents the remarkable stories of five Reebok Human Rights Award winners.  These young men and women have created positive change in their countries through nonviolent means, and have all done so before the age of thirty.

Thousands of students from around the world have already experienced this interactive website. Students first learn about the five upstanders and then add their own thoughts and opinions on a diverse range of social justice and human rights issues.

About Facing History and Ourselves

Facing History and Ourselves is an international leader in civic education for middle and high school students, reaching young people at a time in their development when questions of identity and belonging are relevant and accessible. For more than 30 years, Facing History has produced classroom resources and effective educational strategies that promote student engagement, critical thinking, and a scholarly approach to the study of history.

Our work convenes students, educators, scholars, and the general public, and engages a broad constituency in important conversations around themes of identity and belonging, personal responsibility and community participation, and the role of the individual in decisions that shape a democratic society. By teaching students to think critically, to empathize, to recognize the moral choices, to make their voices heard, we put in their hands the possibility—and the responsibility—to do the most serious work demanded of us all as citizens.
